Cycle of Solace No. 1

A cycle. Transformation within a communal ritual and offering. One hundred hand crafted worry stones, black and white, hung in a circle. Take a worry stone to keep and replace it with a regret or a worry written on a circle of paper. After all had been taken and replaced with something shared, I gathered the papers and took them to Candler, North Carolina to bury them. The clay rich soil will degrade the paper and eventually turn it back into the soft earth that the stones were made from, where the cycle began. The stone, taken by each individual, travels the world as a tactile tool for grounding and a reminder to release stress. Ceramic is a fragile material at this scale – as the stones take on new lives, woven into each individual’s life, they eventually reach the end of their own existence: to be dropped, shattered, broken at a moment of carefree worry-less-ness.
